Exercise matters: new insights into treating fatigue in patients with metastatic breast cancer

Are you a healthcare professional working with patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC)?
This webinar offers you essential, evidence-based insights that can elevate your clinical practice!

In this webinar, Dr Martijn Stuiver and Dr Anouk Hiensch will share both the primary and cost-effectiveness results of the PREFERABLE-EFFECT study. This multinational (NL, DE, SP, SE, PL, AUS) randomized controlled trial investigated the (cost-)effectiveness of a 9-month supervised exercise program on fatigue and quality of life in patients with metastatic breast cancer. Moreover, they will share the experiences of the participants within the study. Finally, future perspectives will be discussed and recommendations based on the results will be shared.

This webinar brings together research, practical applications, and patient experiences.

Speaker:
Dr Anouk Hiensch has a background in Health Sciences (BSc) and Epidemiology (MSc). From 2017-2021, she conducted her PhD on the effects of exercise in patients with cancer and its underlying mechanisms, at theUniversity Medical Center Utrecht, Julius Center. After completing her PhD, Anouk continued working at the Julius Center. Her research focuses on elucidating the underlying mechanisms of the beneficial effects of exercise in patients with cancer. Understanding the (patho)physiology is crucial to counteract the detrimental effects of cancer treatment. She is the scientific coordinator of two international exercise-oncology trials: PREFERABLE (H2020-funded) and PREFERABLE-II (Horizon Europe funded). She is also involved in national exercise-oncology trials, including PERFECT (completed), RADICES and SICILY. Anouk was involved in the development of a website for patients and healthcare providers about exercise and cancer (Bewegen-en-kanker-info). Finally, Anouk serves in international webinar and educational committees, including the Cancer Cachexia Society Education Committee and International Society of Exercise Oncology webinar committee.

Dr Martijn Stuiver is a PhD clinical epidemiologist with a professional background of 20+ years in oncology physical therapy. His research is directed at functional recovery from cancer and its treatment. With his group at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, he aims to gain a better understanding of physical functioning of people living with or beyond cancer, identify which patients are at risk for poor functioning/ recovery, and determine how interventions – exercise in particular – can help improve treatment outcomes and quality of life. Martijn Stuiver is a founding board member of Onconet, the Netherlands’ nationwide network of physiotherapists working in Oncology, and he contributed to several national and international guidelines on cancer rehabilitation. Beside his work in cancer research, he is associate professor clinical epidemiology at the Amsterdam University Medical Center, where he is the program director of the master program Evidence Based Practice in Health Care
